Stay connected to your commercial solar investment
A commercial solar installation is a long-term energy asset. Understanding how that asset performs is essential to protecting its value.
Modern solar monitoring platforms provide visibility into electricity generation, equipment operation and historical performance, allowing business owners and facility managers to monitor their systems from a smartphone or computer.
At Stellr Solar, we recognize that a successful solar installation involves more than installing panels. It also means helping our customers understand and manage their energy systems after commissioning.
1. What is commercial solar monitoring?
Commercial solar monitoring uses connected inverters, communication gateways, meters and software platforms to collect information about a solar energy system.
Depending on the equipment installed, monitoring may provide access to:
- Current solar electricity production.
- Daily, monthly, yearly and lifetime energy generation.
- Inverter and equipment operating status.
- System alarms and fault notifications.
- Historical performance graphs.
- Energy consumption and grid import/export information, where compatible metering is installed.
- Battery performance and operating information, where supported.
These tools help business owners understand how their solar system is operating throughout the year.
2. How do you measure solar performance?
Two measurements are particularly important.
Power (kW)
Power shows the rate at which the system is generating electricity at a given moment.
For example, a commercial solar installation might show 85 kW of instantaneous production during a sunny period.
Energy (kWh)
Energy represents the amount of electricity produced over time.
For example, a system generating an average of 85 kW for two hours would produce approximately 170 kWh during that period.
Monitoring platforms commonly display both measurements, helping customers understand immediate system activity and cumulative energy production.
3. What should businesses review regularly?
A useful monitoring routine includes reviewing several indicators.
Daily production
Check whether the solar system is operating and generating electricity during daylight hours.
Monthly and annual generation
Compare energy production over longer periods to identify seasonal patterns and unusual changes.
Equipment alarms
Review inverter warnings, communication faults and other reported events.
Consumption and grid interaction
Where compatible meters are installed, monitor how much solar energy is being used on-site and how electricity is exchanged with the grid.
Performance compared with expectations
Compare actual generation with the original production estimate while accounting for sunlight, weather, temperature, snow coverage and operating conditions.
A cloudy month or a snow-covered array does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.
4. Inverter-level versus panel-level monitoring
Not every solar installation provides the same level of detail.
String-inverter monitoring
Commercial systems using string inverters generally provide inverter-level information and, depending on the equipment, additional MPPT or string-level operating data.
Microinverter monitoring
Systems using compatible microinverters may provide information for individual solar modules.
Battery monitoring
Compatible hybrid inverters or battery systems may provide additional information about stored energy, battery charge levels, operating modes and charging/discharging activity.
The level of available information depends on the equipment, meters, software and system configuration.
5. Common monitoring platforms
Stellr Solar works with different technologies according to project requirements.
SolisCloud
A monitoring platform for compatible Solis inverter systems, including commercial installations. Depending on the configuration, it can provide production reporting, fault notifications and advanced diagnostic information.
Hoymiles S-Miles Cloud
A platform for compatible Hoymiles microinverter installations, providing production history, system status and module-level performance information where supported.
Enphase App
Provides system monitoring for compatible Enphase installations, with panel-level visibility and optional consumption, grid and battery information based on installed components.
Your Stellr Solar proposal will identify the equipment and monitoring platform selected for your project.
6. Does monitoring automatically detect every problem?
No monitoring platform can guarantee that every possible issue will be detected immediately.
Alerts depend on the available measurements, communication connectivity, equipment settings and enabled notifications.
For example, an inverter may continue operating normally while a network outage prevents its latest data from appearing in the cloud.
A communication outage does not necessarily mean the solar system has stopped generating electricity.
Likewise, the absence of an alarm is not a substitute for all required inspections or maintenance.
7. What happens if the system underperforms?
If production appears unusually low, several factors may be investigated:
- Weather conditions and seasonal variation.
- Snow, vegetation or other shading.
- Inverter status and electrical alarms.
- Communication gateway or internet connection.
- Grid outages or utility-imposed operating restrictions.
- Equipment performance and operating conditions.
- Changes in the facility's electrical configuration.
Where necessary, the issue may require a technician's assessment or an on-site inspection.
8. Monitoring and long-term maintenance
Monitoring is an important part of commercial solar asset management, but it does not eliminate the need for maintenance.
Commercial systems may require periodic electrical inspections, equipment checks, vegetation management, inverter maintenance and other activities according to site conditions and manufacturer recommendations.
The specific monitoring, maintenance, alert-response and support services provided by Stellr Solar are defined in the customer's agreement.
9. Getting access to your system
After successful commissioning and monitoring setup, the designated facility owner or authorized representative can receive access to the applicable monitoring platform.
Stellr Solar can assist with the initial monitoring setup and explain the main dashboard features during the project handover.
Internet or cellular connectivity and compatible communication equipment may be required.
Your commercial solar system should be more than an installation on your roof. It should be an energy asset you can understand, monitor and manage.
With the appropriate monitoring equipment, Stellr Solar helps customers gain visibility into their solar generation and long-term system operation.
Monitoring features vary by manufacturer and system configuration. Production monitoring does not guarantee energy savings, equipment uptime, fault response times or specific performance outcomes unless these are expressly included in the project agreement.
