Frequently asked questions about commercial solar and battery storage

Investing in solar energy is an important decision for any business.

Whether you are evaluating a rooftop solar installation, a ground-mounted solar array, commercial battery storage or a combination of these technologies, it is helpful to understand how the system works, how projects are developed and what to expect over the long term.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions Stellr Solar receives from commercial customers.

System Design & Suitability

1. Is my commercial property suitable for solar?

Many commercial properties can accommodate solar installations.

Warehouses, office buildings, manufacturing facilities, retail locations, agricultural buildings and multi-unit residential properties may all be suitable.

The feasibility depends on roof condition, structural capacity, shading, electrical infrastructure, available installation space, utility requirements and energy consumption.

Stellr Solar evaluates these factors before recommending a system configuration.

2. How large should my commercial solar system be?

The appropriate system size depends primarily on your property's electricity usage, operating profile and available installation space.

Commercial solar systems can range from relatively small rooftop installations to several hundred kilowatts or larger.

A properly sized system should consider annual electricity consumption, daytime loads, interconnection limitations and project economics.

The largest possible solar array is not always the most financially effective solution.

3. Can solar panels be installed on flat commercial roofs?

Yes.

Flat roofs are commonly used for commercial solar installations. Depending on the building and structural requirements, solar panels can be installed using suitable ballasted or mechanically attached mounting systems.

The final design must account for structural loading, wind and snow loads, drainage, roofing warranties, access pathways and applicable requirements.

4. Can we install solar on the ground instead of the roof?

Yes, subject to available land, zoning, structural and foundation requirements, electrical access and utility approval.

Ground-mounted systems may offer additional flexibility in panel orientation, tilt and maintenance access.

However, trenching, foundation work and civil requirements can increase project costs.

Financial Benefits & Incentives

5. How much can a business save with commercial solar?

Savings depend on the electricity tariff, how much solar energy is used directly on-site, the treatment of exports and other site-specific factors.

Businesses with significant daytime consumption can often use a substantial share of their solar generation.

Stellr Solar prepares project-specific financial estimates based on available electricity data and the proposed design.

6. What is the typical payback period for commercial solar?

There is no single payback period applicable to every commercial installation.

Project cost, electricity rates, self-consumption, financing, tax incentives, maintenance and energy production all affect the result.

An accurate assessment should distinguish simple payback from more comprehensive measures such as net present value, internal rate of return and financed cash flow.

7. Does commercial solar qualify for the federal 30% Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit?

Eligible businesses investing in qualifying clean-energy equipment may qualify for a refundable federal Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit of up to 30%.

The full rate depends on the applicable eligibility criteria, including relevant labour requirements.

Not every business, equipment item or project cost automatically qualifies.

We recommend consulting your accountant or tax advisor to confirm eligibility before relying on the incentive in an investment decision.

8. Can a business also claim accelerated depreciation?

Potentially.

Qualifying clean-energy equipment may be eligible for accelerated Capital Cost Allowance, including enhanced first-year deductions under applicable rules.

A depreciation deduction is not the same as a refundable investment tax credit. Their combined treatment requires professional tax review.

9. Are financing options available?

Commercial projects may be financed through equipment loans, business term loans, property-secured financing or other arrangements.

Depending on the project, a lease or third-party ownership structure may also be considered.

Availability depends on the lender, borrower eligibility, project economics and financing conditions.

Nova Scotia Power & Approvals

10. Can commercial solar export excess electricity to the grid?

Eligible Nova Scotia Power customers may participate in the Commercial Net Metering Program.

The program allows qualifying renewable electricity generation to offset eligible electricity consumption, with surplus energy accounted for under the applicable billing rules.

The system must satisfy program sizing limits and interconnection requirements.

As of October 2026, the program generally covers qualifying systems above 27 kW AC, with a maximum of 200 kW AC for certain customers and up to 1,000 kW AC for eligible demand-tariff customers and certain other qualifying customers.

The exact eligibility and export treatment must be verified for each project.

11. Will solar eliminate our demand charges?

Not necessarily.

Solar may reduce grid demand during some daylight periods, but commercial demand charges are determined by the applicable tariff and the facility's demand profile.

If the highest demand occurs when solar production is low, solar may provide limited demand-charge reduction.

Commercial battery storage may offer additional demand-management benefits when appropriately sized and controlled.

12. What permits and approvals are required?

Requirements depend on system size, location, mounting method and electrical configuration.

A commercial solar project may require electrical permits, structural engineering, building permits, utility interconnection review, equipment documentation and inspections.

Larger systems can require more extensive technical studies and coordination.

Stellr Solar works through the applicable project approval and documentation process before installation and energization.

13. How long does a commercial solar project take?

Commercial projects generally take longer than residential installations due to engineering, approvals, procurement and coordination with operating facilities.

For many conventional commercial projects, several months should be allowed between agreement signing and completion.

The actual schedule depends on project complexity, utility requirements, equipment availability, permits and construction conditions.

Stellr Solar provides project-specific scheduling information during the planning and execution process.

Installation & Building Operations

14. Will our business need to close during installation?

Not necessarily.

Many commercial solar installations can proceed while the facility remains operational.

However, some electrical connections, equipment modifications or inspections may require planned shutdowns.

These activities should be coordinated in advance to minimize disruption.

15. Will solar damage our roof or affect its warranty?

A properly engineered and installed solar mounting system is designed to be compatible with the relevant roof type and structural requirements.

Roof condition, waterproofing, attachment methods and existing warranty provisions should be reviewed before installation.

Some roofing manufacturers may impose specific requirements or require approval to preserve warranty coverage.

16. Can commercial solar provide electricity during a power outage?

A conventional grid-connected solar installation generally shuts down when utility power is lost to prevent unsafe backfeeding.

Backup operation requires compatible equipment specifically designed to isolate from the utility and supply designated loads.

A battery system, generator or integrated microgrid configuration may be appropriate depending on the required backup capacity and duration.

Solar panels alone should not be assumed to provide emergency power.

Operation, Monitoring & Maintenance

17. How long do commercial solar systems last?

Quality solar panels are typically designed for decades of operation, with manufacturer product and performance warranties varying by model.

Inverters, communication equipment, mounting systems and other components have different expected service lives and warranty periods.

The specific warranties included in your project are identified in your Stellr Solar proposal and equipment documentation.

18. How much maintenance is required?

Solar installations generally require relatively modest routine maintenance, but they are not maintenance-free.

Depending on the site, maintenance may include inspections, electrical checks, cleaning when appropriate, vegetation control, monitoring reviews and equipment service.

Commercial ground-mounted and larger rooftop systems may require more formal maintenance plans.

19. Can we monitor our commercial solar system?

Yes, with compatible monitoring equipment and connectivity.

Depending on the system, customers can review production, historical performance, equipment status, alarms and additional electrical data.

The available monitoring features depend on the inverters, meters, communication devices and software selected.

20. What happens if something goes wrong?

Commercial solar systems can be supported through equipment monitoring, troubleshooting and service procedures.

If a customer notices an alarm or unexpected reduction in generation, the first step is to document the issue and contact the designated support provider.

Any required electrical testing or repairs must be performed by appropriately qualified personnel.

Warranty coverage and response times depend on the equipment and service agreement.

  • Your commercial electricity bills and consumption history.
  • Available interval demand data.
  • Building address and available roof or land area.
  • Electrical service details and existing infrastructure.
  • Building and roofing information, where available.
